Dental Sealants for Children

If you knew you could decrease your child’s risk of cavities by up to 75%, you would, right? Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings that smooth out the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, making them far more resistant to decay. According to studies from the CDC, school-age children without sealants have nearly three times more cavities than children who receive them. So what exactly are dental sealants, and how do they help?

What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are clear or tooth-colored coatings applied to the grooves and pits of molars and premolars. These areas are especially vulnerable to cavities because food particles and bacteria can easily get trapped there, even with good brushing habits. Sealants act as a barrier, blocking out plaque and acids that cause tooth decay.

How Are Sealants Applied?

Applying dental sealants is a quick, painless, and non-invasive process:

  • The tooth is cleaned and dried

  • A gentle conditioning solution is applied

  • The sealant material is painted onto the tooth

  • A special light hardens the sealant in seconds

No drilling, no numbing, and no discomfort — most children don’t even realize anything has been done.

Who Should Get Dental Sealants?

Sealants are most commonly recommended for children as soon as their permanent molars come in, typically around ages 6 and 12. However, teenagers and even adults without existing decay or fillings may also benefit from sealants. They’re especially helpful for children who are cavity-prone or still developing strong oral hygiene habits.

Are Dental Sealants Safe?

Yes. Dental sealants have been used safely and effectively for decades. They are durable, BPA-safe, and supported by organizations like the American Dental Association and the CDC as a proven way to prevent cavities in children.

How Long Do Sealants Last?

Sealants can last several years with proper care and regular dental checkups. During routine visits, our dental team will check the sealants and repair or replace them if needed to ensure continued protection.

Sealants Are Not a Substitute for Brushing

While dental sealants offer excellent protection, they work best alongside daily brushing, flossing, a healthy diet, and regular dental visits. Together, these habits create a strong foundation for lifelong oral health.
